Chicago to Get Federal Help on Gun Crimes

Police investigate the scene of a double homicide in Chicago in February. More than 1,700 people have been shot in the city so far this year

Because of "crime and killings" now at "epidemic proportions", President Trump has sent the feds into Chicago, he tweeted Friday morning.

President Donald Trump tweeted Friday that Chicago crime is at "epidemic proportions".

The Chicago Police Department and Department of Justice's Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives will announce Friday a new task force aimed at decreasing the spread of illegal guns throughout the Windy City.

Chicago police officials said the unit would focus on preventing illegally possessed guns from flowing through the city and on targeting people repeatedly involved in gun crimes, both of which have always been cited as drivers of the violence.

Chicago's police department personally asked Attorney General Jeff Sessions for additional resources a few months ago. Despite the drop in shootings, murders have remained relatively flat compared to past year.

"The ATF agents are working with about 20 counterparts from the Chicago Police Department and Illinois State Police on a strike force whose mission is to solve shootings and hunt down gun traffickers through ballistics technology", writes the Sun-Times.

And if he can help, and give full force and effect as the president to communities that are suffering, they are suffering gang and crime and drug violence, then I know he will want to do that.

Meanwhile, Chicago police say crime in the city has decreased from 2016, when there were 4,331 shooting victims and 762 homicides.

Officials with the mayor's office said that the additional ATF agents come from a request the city made to the Obama administration last summer. The Chicago Sun-Times reports 20 additional ATF agents have been sent to Chicago. So-called "sanctuary" policies tie the hands of law enforcement by rejecting common sense and undermining federal laws that would remove criminal, illegal aliens from the streets and remove them from this country.

"The Trump Administration will not let the bloodshed go on; we can not accept these levels of violence".

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement late Thursday that federal and Cook County prosecutors plan to develop new strategies to prosecute gun crimes and offenders.
