A man runs toward the wreckage of a plane on the 405 Freeway

A pilot and a passenger both suffered injuries Friday morning after the small plane they were in crash-landed on the 405 Freeway near the John Wayne Airport.

The airport is located next to the interstate, and the plane crashed in the southbound lane not far from of the runway it was trying to reach. They show the plane in flames, emergency teams rushing to the scene, and the plane's passengers after they were evacuated. No one on the ground was injured.

Two people were injured and taken to the hospital by helicopter. The Federal Aviation Administration said the Cessna 310 aircraft crashed along Interstate 405 as it was attempting to return to the airport.

Images posted on social media showed flames shooting from the aircraft and smoke surrounding it.

Orange County Fire Capt. Larry Kurtz says an off-duty firefighter rescued the two people from the wreckage. He says the driver of the vehicle suffered a "bruised elbow".

A woman who had been on the plane pulled a man from the wreckage and said he was her husband, according to a witness who spoke to KABC. The airfield was closed to arrival flights for a period of time but has now returned to full operation. The 405 Freeway has been closed in both directions at MacArthur due to debris on the roadway.
