Uproar over 30% tax on TN cinema theatres

GST effect Over 1000 cinema theatres in Tamil Nadu shut down to protest 58 per cent tax

Almost 1,000 cinema theatres across Tamil Nadu has shut down operations from today - July 3.

Ramanathan said that if the state government imposes local taxes, the theatre owners would have to pay more than 50% of the ticket price as tax (inclusive of GST).

Responding to a question asked by a reporter Ramanathan said an additional levy of about eight percent under GST over 30 percent local body tax had pushed the total taxes to over 60 percent.

The theatre owners have demanded the removal of the local body tax, which would automatically fix the additional levy, stressing that the livelihood of about 10 lakh people depends on the film industry.

A team comprising of Vishal, representatives of theatre owners association and others met Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami at the Secretariat in Chennai to press for the revocation of the 30% entertainment tax.

President of South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce L Suresh said, "If the ticket rate is Rs 100".

He has urged the Tamil Nadu Film Director's Association to intervene in the matter. We are not happy with the corporation tax which is 30 percent.

Indefinite strike over GST: Nearly 1,100 theaters in and around Tamil Nadu are on indefinite strike over GST. The Tamil Nadu government's last minute order converting the Entertainment Tax into local body tax has raised many questions.

DUP head: Talks with UK Conservatives going well
If that happens, Corbyn will demand a chance to try to form a government by uniting progressive factors in the House of Commons. But a deal with the DUP also risks destabilizing Northern Ireland by increasing the influence of pro-British unionists.

Besides the local tax, a GST of 18 per cent has been fixed for tickets priced below Rs 100 and 28 per cent for those above Rs 100.

In a press release, Tamil Nadu Film Producers Council had appealed to theatre owners not to cancel the shows as it would affect around 20 producers.

The film industry strike has put shutters on four newly released movies - Ivan Thandhiran, Engeyum Naan Iruppen, Kaadhal Kaalam, Dubbed version of Mohanlal movie Puli Murugan. This will imply curtains in theaters for almost 10 movies released two weeks back at least for now.

According to PTI, Ramanathan said, "We welcome GST".

Reacting on the double taxation by the state, Haasan said in a statement: "Filmmaking has been made hard deliberately".

Mumbai: While the implementation of GST has affected multiple sectors across consumer strata, the entertainment industry has been bearing the brunt as well, with a staggering 30% taxation forced onto it.
