At Least 16 Dead in Marine Aircraft Crash in Mississippi

The crew and passengers consisted of 15 Marines and one Navy corpsman

A witness said some bodies were found more than a mile away. "Our hearts go out to the families of those killed, as well as the Marines they served alongside".

The FBI has confirmed they have sent agents to the scene to aid in the investigation, but they do not now believe the crash was the result of foul play.

Several bouquets of flowers were left at Stewart air base's main gate Tuesday, but the site was closed to reporters and the public.

Many expressed their condolences after the crash.

USA officials on Tuesday were investigating the cause of a military transport plane crash that killed 16 service members including elite special operations forces a day earlier, leaving a miles-long trail of wreckage in rural northern Mississippi. Their unit is part of Marine Corps Forces, Special Operations Command. Andrew Aranda, a spokesperson for the Marine Forces Reserve, said there do not appear to be any survivors from the crash.

"Our men and women in uniform risk themselves every day to secure our freedom", he said.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire MARSOC family at this time", MARSOC's chief of staff said in a statement released by the military. "It's burning worse now than it was early in the afternoon", said Jones. "This loss impacts us all".

"We do have debris scattered on both sides of USA 82". ". We lost some of our best yesterday".

Local farmer Andy Jones was working on his family's catfish farm when he suddenly heard a loud boom.

"At first it looked like an acrobatic plane, like a stunt plane, blowing the smoke out the back", Jones said. "It was spinning down".

Because the plane was carrying small-arms ammunition and weapons, an explosive ordnance disposal team was at the crash site, military officials said.

" 'Beans are about waist-high, and there wasn't much sticking out above the beans, ' he said".

Officials say debris from the KC-130 is scattered over 2 to 3 miles and that it likely will take between five and six days to clean up.
