Maryam Mirzakhani, first woman to win mathematics' Fields Medal, dies at 40

Here's a Harvard lecture by Mirzakahni in November of 2014, just nine months before she was awarded the Fields Medal.

"This isn't the kind of thing you do to win at pool, but it's the kind of thing you do to win a Fields Medal", University of Wisconsin professor Jordan Ellenberg wrote in a Slate article in 2014. Kerckhoff is a mathematics professor at Stanford and was one of Mirzakhani's collaborators.

Mirzakhani, 40, was the first woman in the world and the first Iranian to be awarded the prestigious Fields Medal.

The 40-year-old fought the disease for four years and was recently hospitalised in the United States as the cancer spread to her bone marrow.

Firouz Naderi, a former Iranian director of Solar Systems Exploration at NASA, had also announced her death in an Instagram post earlier in the day. "Maryam was a brilliant mathematical theorist, and also a humble person who accepted honors only with the hope that it might encourage others to follow her math".

Born in Tehran, Mirzakhani came to the U.S.to attend graduate school at Harvard University.

Recently it was revealed that Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner were cast to play the comedy duo Timon and Pumbaa . It will follow Disney's roaringly successful live-action take on " The Jungle Book " from previous year .

A year later, she became the first Iranian student to achieve a flawless score and win two gold medals at the Olympiad. She had already been battling the disease for several years.

In 1999, Mirzakhani earned a bachelor of science degree in mathematics from the Sharif University of Technology in Tehran.

In recent years, she collaborated with Alex Eskin at the University of Chicago to take on another of the most-vexing problems in the field: the trajectory of a billiards ball around a polygonal table. The paper, more than 200 pages long, has been hailed as "the beginning of a new era" in mathematics and "a titanic work". She liked to read and thought that maybe she would become a writer.

Mirzakhani is survived by her husband, Jan Vondrák, and a daughter, Anahita - who once referred to her mother's work as "painting" because of the doodles and drawings that marked her process of working on proofs and problems, according to an obituary released by Stanford.
