Legendary film and television actor Martin Landau has passed away, aged 89

Martin Landau, Oscar Winner for 'Ed Wood,' Dies at 89

THR notes that Landau found a "kindred spirit" in Burton, who would later cast him in Sleepy Hollow and Frankenweenie.

Landau's career slowed somewhat in the 1970s, with sporadic television guest roles and parts in mostly forgettable movies sprinkled throughout the decade.

It was a daring artistic choice for that era, and the actor's friends anxious that he'd be typecast in effeminate roles after that. At age 17 he began a five-year stint working as a cartoonist for the New York Daily News, and then quit his job to enter the Actors Studio at age 22.

The actor spent five years as a newspaper cartoonist in his native NY before deciding to focus on acting; As Landau often stated, he and Steve McQueen were notably the only two applicants accepted into the Actors Studio in 1955.

Landau was a regular fixture at autograph conventions, and was happy to appear at events to speak about his work.

He then starred for three years in the hit series, "Mission Impossible", leaving in 1969 because of a contract dispute, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Pistons renouncing Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, making him a UFA
The former top-10 pick averaged 13.8 points while shooting at a 35 percent clip from three-point range this past season. Caldwell-Pope's -1.4 nERD would position him 5th among Lakers players now locked in for the 2017-18 season.

Though he worked consistently, his movie career didn't kick into high gear again until he was 60. He even received the best supporting actor nomination for his performance.

Landau also had the major role of Judah Rosenthal in Woody Allen's 1989 movie, "Crimes and Misdemeanors", for which he earned another Oscar nod for best supporting actor. The role of a seemingly decent, venerable man harboring a dark secret became a Landau specialty.

His other acting credits include Ready to Rumble, Edtv, The X-Files: Fight the Future, Rounders, The Majestic, Mysteria, City Hall, and the made-for-TV Anna Nicole biopic. One of them, actress Juliet Landau, appeared with her father in Ed Wood.

The beloved actor got his start on-screen in the 1950s. Coincidentally, Landau was widely reported to have been Gene Roddenberry's first choice to play Spock, a role that eventually went on to define Nimoy's career.

Fortunately, Landau earned himself an enormous career resurgence in the late 1980s. It was, he reminded one journalist, the first time this "Jewish kid from Brooklyn" took a role that called for him to play Jewish. He received another three Emmy nominations, for his work on "Without a Trace" in 2004 and 2005, and for "Entourage" in 2007.
